After the first three months of 2020 passed by, the whole world stopped and so did the nightlife. Clubs across New York City had to be closed down and there were restrictions on private gatherings. All that is over now and life has returned to a new normal. DJ Beyond who grew up in Manhattan and took up DJ’ing from a very young age shares all the changes he sees in the nightlife today.
“Going to the club is the same as before but now you need to be vaccinated and must show proof for it. People still party like they used to in crowds but some people feel the need to keep a safe distance from others. When my company was allowed to host events again, we had to make sure none of our team members were sick or carrying any diseases. There are strict checks on it from the local government as well,” says DJ Beyond.
The 38-year-old DJ has seen a lot of different times in the city. His father was a musician and played with many Spanish Bands. Growing up, he used to go set up the stage and carry things for the bands. He later built upon that success with a friend and started BeyondRest Entertainment. The company has been organizing events in New York for years and has also been affected by all the recent changes and restrictions. Those previous times were quite different from the ones going on in 2021.
Throughout his DJ’ing career, Damian Perez Jr. or DJ Beyond has been performing at several clubs that include Webster Hall, Limelight, and Stonewall. He is among the people who got to witness all the changes in the last two years from a first-hand view.
Apart from the nightlife, many other things have changed for DJs as well. Here’s how DJ Beyond explains it.
“When I was working hard to carve my way into the industry, there weren’t a lot of outlets to go to. I had only two ways to boost my DJ’ing career. One was to give my best in the clubs so that people fall in love with the way I make them dance, and the other was to appear on television shows. Thankfully I got lucky in both. In the last two years, new and experienced DJs have found out the power of social media. You can get recognized and appreciated for your talent there on different music streaming platforms,” adds the DJ.
DJ Beyond has certainly grown to fame by making a name on the stage and by working on TV. He has won the Best Blend DJ by Urban Mixx Awards and is a nominee of Best Duo & Blend DJ in the Justo’s Mixtape Awards. The DJ also appeared on MTV’s Wild n Out, WE TV’s Bridezilla, BET’s Rap City, and VH1’s Love & Hip Hop.
